1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – The Specialty
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) as a specialty is considered to be the bridge between Medical and Dental Faculties. It is a challenging surgical branch that combines Surgical, Medical and Dental knowledge and skill thus playing an intense dual role in healthcare provision.
The OMFSUnit is based out of Seychelles Hospital, Victoria as part of the HCA, Department of Health and plays a key role in managing a multitude of diseases/disorders of the Head, Face, Jaw and Neck region independentlyor as part ofMulti-Disciplinary Team.
The OMF Surgeon is a versatile and dynamic health care provider who is a vital cog in the structure of the Hospital for a wide range of faculties ranging from the Emergency Room and Trauma to Craniofacial disorders, Pathologies and Oncology.
2. Services Offered
- Oral Surgery and Dento-Alveolar Surgery – includes Surgical Extraction of impacted teeth such as 3rd molars (Wisdom teeth), Oral mucosa surgery, jaw bone contouring, etc.
- Trauma and Reconstruction – Fracture Repair and fixation of facial and Jaw bones. Reconstruction of post traumatic defects. Cosmetic closure of wounds.
- Surgical Oncology – Tumor Ablation and Reconstruction – Surgical management of Bony and Soft tissue tumors – Benign and Malignant – with reconstruction of the surgical defect.
- Cysts and other Pathologies including Lymph Node pathology
- Salivary Gland Disorders – Surgery for pathologies and tumors both benign and malignant and salivary stones associated with the major and minor salivary glands.
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Surgery – Surgery for functional or inflammatory disorders of the joint, bony disorders – osteoarthritis or ankylosis, chronic dislocations or TMJ tumors.
- Craniofacial / Orthognathic Surgery – To correct skeletal and dento-facial deformities and also as part of cosmetic improvement for facial aesthetics. Done in conjunction with Orthodontists as Multi-team approach.
- Reconstructive Surgery – Reconstruction of congenital, developmental, post-trauma, post-tumor resection and degenerative/age related defects.
- Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery
- Facial Space Infections / Abscess.
- Facial and Trigeminal Nerve injury and disorders.
3. Emergency Services.
The OMFS Unit is available on 24 hour call to attend to emergencies of the Head, Face, Jaw and Neck region which are brought to the hospital Emergency Room, in the Wards or assistance to another Unit.
4. OMFS in the Community
The OMFS Unit extends its community outreach to Anse Royale Health Centre & English River Health Centre weekly and to Baie St. Anne Health Centre, Praslin on a monthly basis.
5. International Liaison
The OMFS Unit liaises with Cleft Children International – CCI, Zurich Switzerland via CCI Chennai, India for management of complex cases of Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Disorders.
