Clinical Laboratory Service

The Clinical Laboratory Service falls under the Health Care Agency of the Ministry of Health. The central lab is located in the block immediately behind Oncology Unit (Red Roof Building) and adjacent to Accident & Emergency Department. The reception is located on the first floor, above the Blood Transfusion Center. It is the largest medical diagnostic laboratory in the country and performs tests for in-patients for the Seychelles hospital and out-patients, from health centers and specialized clinics. A peripheral lab is situated on Praslin at the Baie Ste Anne Hospital and offers tests for patients on Praslin and La-Digue.

The Clinical Laboratory is vital in assisting doctors to diagnose illnesses and to monitor and manage optimal treatment effects for their patients. It is structured into the following specialized units; Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, Transfusion Serology, Histopathology, Cytology and Haematology. A Chief of Laboratory is overall in-charge with the different units headed by a unit head.

The laboratory has adopted a Quality Management System (QMS) for the purpose of the effective and efficient use of its resources. All employees are committed to the culture of quality. All staff shares responsibility for identifying nonconformities or opportunities for improvement, so that corrective or preventive actions can be taken to ensure the laboratory meets the needs of its customers.

HOURS OF SERVICE

The laboratory runs a 24-hour service, Monday to Sunday.
Note that after normal working hours (8-4pm), on weekends and public holidays, the lab operates an emergency service only. Samples should be sent only if they are required on an URGENT basis.
The Surgical Pathology (Histopathology & Cytology) unit operates only during normal working hours, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.
