To commemorate the worldwide celebration of World Food Day 2017, the nutrition unit of the Ministry of Health made a donation of fruits, vegetables, and other non-perishable food items, to children residing at the President’s Village in Port Glaud as well as three orphanages in Seychelles.
The small event took place in the dining hall of the residence in Port Glaud on Monday 16th October 2017.
In a loud and cheerful ambience created by all the children, Mrs Stephanie Desnousse, Dietician at the unit presented the items to the Manager of Presidents Village, Mrs Brigitte Balette.
“Today is World Food Day, and we want to commemorate this occasion with a gift of fruits and vegetables to the foster homes,” Mrs Denousse said. “At the nutrition unit we promote healthy eating and this is an ideal occasion for us to further promote the intake of fruits and vegetables as well as a variety of other essential food items by the children in foster homes.”
On behalf of the President’s Village, Mrs Balette thanked the unit for their positive initiative, especially on such an important day that requires more acknowledgement.
Following the presentation the children were able to view the various food items, inquire about them and savour some of the fruits.
World Food Day is commemorated every year on 16th October 2017 by the Food and Agriculture Organization UNFAO. Events on this day promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.
The nutrition unit have also contributed several fruit and vegetable seedlings in partnership with the Seychelles Agricultural Agency, which will be planted across the various homes to ensure the continuous consumption of fruits and vegetables.
